Great Britain Primary schools to get a national offer day

By Geoff Moffat

The rules for parents applying for college places for their youngsters are to be modified from February 2012.

What the changes mean:

Primary schools will have a National Offer Day like secondary faculties already have. The offer day will be 16th April every year, from 2014.

Nick Gibb MP the Faculties Minister said:

"A new National Offer Day for primary schools "as advised by the Chief Faculties Judge "will introduce clarity and consistency in the system for many thousands of parents. Receiving offers on different days is confusing and stressed, especially for parents making cross-border applications to colleges in neighbouring local authorities."

As well as this:

There will be flexibility in the child class size limit "for twins and youngsters of service staff. This should end the insane situation where one twin is offered a place and the other refused.

The time period elders have to appeal against a school admission call will increase from 10 days to 20.

Over-subscribed colleges will be permitted to grow to accommodate more kids. Right now local authorities can refuse such expansion if there are under-subscribed colleges in the area.

Councils won't be permitted to operate "lotteries" to allocate places.

Kids who have formerly been in care but have been adopted will have greater concern than they do now.

Free faculties and academies will be in a position to prioritize youngsters from less well off backgrounds, by giving higher priority to children who qualify for free school meals.

Colleges will be able to prioritize youngsters of school staff.

The proposed amendments will be laid before parliament in December, subject to approval they're going to come into force on 1st Feb 2012. The school admissions guide book will be updated with the newest info as quickly as it becomes legislation. We manually carry out updates to the guide book every year or every time the UK law changes to ensure that parents are reading the most up to date information available.
