Varadero Beach

By Jose Garces

If you are looking for the best beach in Cuba without a doubt you should consider Varadero. Varadero beach in Cuba is not only equally as beautiful as pretty much all the other beach resort areas in Cuba but it also offer the advantage of a much better infrastructure.

Getting there

There is an international airport in Varadero but please be aware that it is mainly for charter flights coming from Canada and Europe. Schedule flights arrive mainly to Havana airport but it only takes 2 hours by road from Havana to Varadero. This also makes it ideal for the city and beach holiday combination which happens to be so popular in Cuba.

Moving around Varadero

There is a double-decker open-on-top bus that runs on a regular schedule from the tip of the peninsula to the town. You can also hire a car or even better a scooter which is more justifiable given the small size of the peninsula.

What to see and do

A park in the middle of Varadero filled with birds, vendors, music and camel rides for the kids or and Excursion by Catamaran, snorkelling in a coral barrier reef or spending time swimming with dolphins seem to be the most popular of activities in Varadero. However there is much more to do and you can be advised by the tourist desk in your hotel reception.

Where to stay

Varadero beach area has by far the biggest diversity of hotels in Cuba, you will find whole range of accommodation from little hotels to well known international hotel chains like Melia, Sandals, Iberostar or the local Cubanacan.

Safety

Psssyt pssyt where you from? It is not a friendly start of conversation. Probably they will be trying sell you something or give you directions (even you don't need them) expecting a tip back. Simply say NO and keep going. Apart from the odd encounter with undesirable street hustlers there is no much to worry about.
