Feeling Down? This Advice Should Help With Your Depression

By Johnathan Black

Depression is a condition that affects many people today. A lot of people don't understand how serious or debilitating depression can be, but if you're a sufferer of depression, you already know. There is hope, however! Read on for some tips on staving off depression and feeling happy again.

In your battle against depression, challenge your negative thoughts. One of the by-products of depression is putting a negative spin on how you see yourself, your future, and situations that you encounter. If you are like many people who suffer from depression, you are a perfectionist and hold yourself to standards that are impossibly high. Permit yourself to be less than perfect and quit beating yourself up if you don't meet impossible standards you have set for yourself. Negative thoughts will cause depression to become an endless cycle.

Over indulging in food may seem to provide some immediate relief but in reality it will only lead to longer term disappointment and worsen depression. Whatever is making you depressed will not be remedied by eating, so try and find some other way to comfort yourself, one that you will not make you feel guilty about later.

Remember that seeing a psychiatrist doesn't mean you are crazy or in need of medical attention at all. You do not have to schedule regular appointments. You can just go in for a consultation and see what's going on with you.

Surround yourself with positive people and try to avoid those who frustrate you. We cannot control every interaction we have, but we can control who we willingly spend our time with. Avoid people who drain your energy and your mood, and stick to true-blue friends who are satisfying to be around.

Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and soda. Caffeine has been shown to decrease the amount of serotonin in your brain, which can depress your mood. Caffeine will also make you jittery and anxious, adding to your depression. Finally, caffeine can affect your sleep schedules, causing further problems with an already disrupted system.

Depression may well be a serious affliction that millions of people have to suffer through on a daily basis. But you do not have to suffer indefinitely. As soon as you read these tips and decide to put them into action, you're no longer destined to years of misery; you're in recovery.
