Utilizing Windows Shades In A House

By Adriana Noton

Most modern homes feature blinds and curtains. A blind is often a popular choice for people who want window shades that cover the opening without entirely blocking out all of the sunlight. When homeowners have odd shaped windows and cannot find the sizes of coverings they need in retailers, they may need to special order them. Windows shades are usually available at stores that sell home furnishings.

A blind might come in a many styles. The mini-blind stands out as one of the most common offered in stores. This particular style of shade has slender slats that measure about one quarter to one half of an inch in width. They are commonly constructed out of vinyl, plastic, metal, and wood. A metal head rail anchors the blind and woven cords keep the slats together. People can open and close it by pulling on a side cord.

Pleated coverings also are offered in stores. A pleated shade is made from fabric, most often polyester or a cotton blend. They have folds like a fan. Silk cords hold the pleats in place and a metal railing anchors the entire shade. People can order them in variety of colors, including blue, pink, white, and eggshell. Any other colors needed may be custom ordered.

Honeycomb blinds are also made out of fabric-like material and feature folds. However, the folds are layered until the item resembles a honeycomb. These blinds are also secured with silk cords and metal head railings. Like pleated blinds, store have them available in white and off white most commonly. They are available in special colors to match people's decor.

Another type of shade is a roller shade. These coverings are often white or an off white hue. The plastic of the blind rolls around a metal head rail that is anchored to either side of the window. To raise or lower the blind, people can tug on the vinyl slat inserted at the bottom. Tugging it raises and lowers it as high or as low as the person wants. These blinds are inexpensive and easy to replace if they break.

Owning to the direction of its slats, a vertical blind has three inch wide slats and can measure as wide and as long as seven feet. This style of covering can resemble curtains if it is made out of fabric. Some slat styles also include vinyl, metal, and wood. Retailers typically carry the longer style blinds in stock, but if people need shorter blinds, they can be custom ordered.

Having a shade custom ordered lets customers decide if they want their purchase delivered directly to their home or if they want to pick it up at the store. Some customers are not home during the day and prefer it to be delivered elsewhere.

Homeowners that want to include modern items in their homes often purchase windows shades. These fixtures are widely available at major retailers and home improvement centers. Customers can custom order their coverings or purchase whatever is available in the store's ready to purchase inventory.
