The Benefits Of Giving Generously In Business

By Chris Newton

Many years ago, before moving in to telemarketing I was a young and frightened recruitment consultant I got handed a pile of cards detailing corporations we were making an attempt to attract as clients. Whoever called would make notes on the call which manifestly sundry from call to call. A standard feature of these notes were 3 letters at the end of a lot of them "K.I.T.

Stupidity

I did not like to let on that I did not know what this meant so simply added these letters to finish of my notes. "Fred not there, K.I.T." "Company gone into receivership, K.I.T." It was when my director was reviewing my cards that she burst out giggling. K.I.T. Was short of course for 'keep in touch ' and I'd advised we should do just that with someone that had died the month earlier. My boss asked me whether I moonlighted on Blackpool pier at the weekend. Really funny. But there's a lesson here

One of our best clients had been promoted and was moving to London. His new role meant he had no power over non permanent staffing levels and so was to all intents and purposes no use to us on 2 counts. Firstly , he was out of our area so regardless of if he did think staff were required it would fall to another branch of our company and secondly, his new job meant he just would never be involved.

Foresight

My co-worker continued to ring him every 6 weeks or thereabouts sent him birthday cards and wrote with the trials and tribulations of the recruitment industry in the North West of Britain. One day I got a little irritated as we were mad busy and I simply couldn't see any point in keeping in contact with someone that just couldn't help us build our business. He was an ex-client, gone forever, worthless. My co-worker just looked at me and sighed, pronouncing how much I had to study sales.

Eighteen months later the telephone rang "it was Mr London based ex-client, only he wasn't London based any more. He'd been promoted again only this time he got to say where in the country he was based and guess where he chose? His remit was to streamline many services for the company (a major blue chip BTW) and one of the biggest areas he'd been tasked with was recruitment.

Enlightenment

My colleague was appointed to provide all temorary staff to 11 sites across the North West and provided 1 or 2 profitable contracts for lots of other braches of our company also. She was gracious enough not to mention my outburst of one or two months earlier but did mumble something about me taking a pebble from her hand.

We all work terribly tough to build our contacts in our business lives. Don't ever judge what could be favourable for you. Give freely without any regard for what you could get back "genuinely and sincerely. You will be rewarded over and again.
