The Purpose For Which CCTV Systems Are Used

By Jason Williams

Closed-circuit television, CCTV systems, are frequently used to prevent criminal activity, or capture it on tape as evidence. These devices are used for reasons of safety and to monitor the activities or transactions that take place in an area or between certain people. Whether for means of policing or protection, they can be very useful.

Using video cameras and a certain number of television sets, CCTV records video footage and transmits is to the monitors for purposes of watching an area or space. Usually these cameras are linked to either a computer or other recording device so that the footage may be recalled and played at a future point in time.

In places that offer retail items for purchase, thievery is more likely to occur, so they will often install CCTVs to protect themselves and others. When an act of theft does take place, the transaction is then recorded and can be used by the police. This will provide them with a picture of the suspect and evidence if there is a trial.

Many traffic lights now have these cameras posted nearby so as to catch offenders when they run a red light. The device will snap a photo of the license plate and a ticket will later be sent to the person through the mail. Some officers have cameras installed on their dashboards as well, so as to protect them or the person being pulled from any unlawful or outrageous behaviors.

Often industrial types of businesses house rooms in which a person cannot stay for any prolonged time frame. Sometimes this room, or the machines which occupy it, require near constant supervision, however. Closed-circuit television equipment makes this possible by allowing an individual to maintain visualization from another area. If there are multiple items which need to be watched, one person can capably do this with the provision of several monitors.

Misconduct or wrongdoings often take place in certain venues more often than in others. These typically include basements, stairwells, elevators, or other dimly lit areas within an office building or a hotel. The use of CCTVs allows a person to provide supervision over such areas. They can also watch several at one time.

The negative consequences of having the capabilities provided by CCTV opens the benefits up to debate. In some countries, the residents claim that they are used to watch over the general public. Criminals now have easier access to watching an area or person. It is the intent of the user that determines whether or not these types of devices are positive or negative in nature.
