Cyprus - My Initial Perceptions of Cyprus

By Rob Atherton

The first time I saw Cyprus, I quickly fell heavily in love with the area. It was a summertime holiday plus the great weather packaged with the balmy, inviting waters of the Mediterranean were quickly enchanting. There's a close link between Britain and the Greek area of Cyprus so it felt more like your own property when compared with other places in the Mediterranean.

We arrived at Larnaca which is relatively well connected with various United Kingdom airports]. Our waiting taxi took us east towards our accommodation at the well known resort of Ayia Napa. It has a warranted reputation as a lively destination, mainly throughout the summer season but we'd reserved a 5* hotel around 2km from the centre at Nissi Beach.

We were booked into the Aeneas Hotel a terrific 5* hotel situated across the road from Nissi Beach. Our accommodation was placed is lovely gardens and the main swimming pool may be the biggest individual pool I've ever seen in a hotel. We were booked into a standard room that was nice and clean, modern and cozy and a few of the superior rooms opened up directly on the main pool. All through the day, the pool, or rather a bit of it, was the focus of the exceptional entertainments team who performed the whole day keeping visitors busy.

Breakfast in our hotel was a selection of classic English or continental breakfasts. There is a wonderful selection of food as well as lots of fruit that is always a welcome sight on holiday. At night, we usually ate away from the hotel because there is a substantial range of bars, cafes and eating places in easy reach or maybe a short taxi trip away in the heart of Ayia Napa. There is a large range of eating options around the Ayia Napa. One evening, we actually tried crocodile meat. In Ayia Napa, I spent a couple of days diving with a dive centre within the resort. The water was welcoming but regrettably, there isn't anywhere near the same level of sea life that I was used to in the Red Sea. We also paid a few visits to the nearby Waterworld Aqua Park and is a fantastic trip for children of all ages.

Another place worth visiting is nearby at Protaras. The Sea Aquarium Park has over 400 species of marine existence on display and outdoors within the gardens, you will discover enclosed ponds with turtles and crocodiles. However, this Cyprus holiday was generally a beach holiday and we spent most of the time either across the road from Aeneas Hotel at Nissi Beach or around the giant hotel swimming pool. We didn't really check out the rest of Cyprus during our holiday. That adventure will have to wait until we return the next time.
