Oil Wrestling on Turkey Holidays - The Country's Most Traditional Sport

By Steve Alexander

Oil wrestling is the main traditional sport in Turkey and is slightly different to the other popular sports of football and sailing in the country. Witness first-hand some traditional Turkish culture and make your Turkey holidays that little bit more interesting by taking a break from the sunbathing.

Back when the Persians were ruling Turkey, it's thought that the first match took place back in 1065 BC. Believed to have had the powers to save the world from evil forces, Rostam was one of the first ever wrestlers to compete. Check out where and when the matches are due to take place if you want to experience oil wrestling on your Turkey holidays.

Depending on what region you're in, the matches have a time cap of 30 or 40 minutes. Traditionally though, matches could go on for days as they had no time limit. The entire country hosts matches at various times of the year, with the oil wrestling season running for eight months.

Why not head out for a traditional Turkish bath if you want to relax after an oil wrestling match. As it gets rid of all your dirt, it will relax and clean you, meaning you'll tan very easily for the rest of your holiday.

Other sports available in Turkey are camel wrestling and football. In camel wrestling, two camels wrestle each other usually in response to a female camel being in heat. Football is very popular in Turkey, with the top league consisting of 18 teams including the famous Galatasaray.

The Majestic Hotel is a complex found in the tourist area Olu Deniz and is located one hour away from the airport - perfect if you're looking for Dalaman holidays. Another great option is the three-star Club Hotel Poseidon, which is close to the beach and offers facilities such as restaurants, animation shows, children's facilities and swimming pools.
