The History Of Model Train Layouts

By Frank Keenan

The railways form an integral part of every civilization. A nations growth and progress depends directly on how good its railway system or network is. The better the system is organized the better it is for a nation to grow.

To run a successful railway network every nation should plan out its system in a very detailed and progressive manner. One must divide its structure in such a way that there should be an intense planning section dedicated to designing various trains as models before selecting a final one to be built to function in its network of trains. It is a system where rail transport system is modeled at a reduced scale or ratio, often recreating real locations.

In many nations this is taken up as a hobby while some other nations introduce competition to select a model train layout. Model Railroading in the US and Railway Modeling in the UK, Australia, Ireland and Canada are seriously practiced hobbies.

Model train layout may start as a hobby from a very tender age, when a child possess a small railway set to spending large sum of money and time on custom layouts.

The earliest model train layout can be traced back to 1840s called the carpet railways. It was followed by many crude models and slowly with the advent of modern times the models started to gain a lot more realistic look and feel.

Model Railroad clubs exist where enthusiasts meet and display their models for the public. Models in this scale are usually hand- built and are powered by live steam, or diesel-hydraulic. Often railways of this size are called miniature railways.

Some famous train model layout designers are John Allen, John Armstrong, David Barrow, Bruce Chubb Walt Disney, and many more.

The Model Railway Club is the oldest society established in 1910, in London, UK. Apart from building models it has many books, periodicals and journals. Again, The Historical Model Railway Society at Butterley, near Ripley, Derbyshire specializes in historical maters and has archives for both members and non members.

Internationally there are several organizations which exist to set standardization among various individual layout sections commonly referred to as modules. These are often selected to be the basis of many real railway projects.

Thus we can see that although it may be termed as a hobby or a time-pass for young adults, it definitely holds serious implication towards building of a nation.
