The Beginners Guide To Model Train Layouts

By Frank Keenan

If you wish to build a model train railroad there are so many products out there these days that you can buy to make your train set the best. To build a railroad you first need a good base, you can build this yourself and the base should be made out of insulated board, obviously you will need something big enough so that you can add everything you want to, to your layout.

You can buy grass, trees, hedges and plants to make the surrounding areas of your track look realistic, the options are only limited by your creativity. Most people decide the layout of their track and the size they wish to make it first before deciding on the surroundings. Remember that when you lay a track there are different sizes for the different sized model locomotives, so if you have a particular locomotive in mind that you have always dreamed of owning, you must ensure that your track size is the correct one.

Once you have laid your track you can start building around it, you can lay grass, trees, plants and hedges where you want to have them, you can build tunnels for your locomotive to go through, remembering of course that your locomotive must be able to clearly go through the tunnel and not get stuck in the middle! There are many model buildings you can buy, or if you are feeling really creative you can you build your own to suit your needs.

You can buy light sets that will light up the buildings from the inside or you can even have street lights if you wish. Having a train station of course is a must, as well as having a model train conductor standing at the platform waiting for the train to arrive. Again, model people are available already painted, or you can paint them yourself to suit the surrounds of your railway.

You can make the land look realistic by painting in rivers and lakes, mountains or hills, beaches or anything else that takes your fancy. As I mentioned before, you are only limited by your imagination. This is your chance to build your own town around which your locomotive travels taking in the views. Many people spend hours upon hours building their railways and there are competitions available for the best of the best if you wish to compete. However, you may just wish to build your railway for your own amusement. Whilst this hobby can be expensive, with a little creativity and know how you can build your railway town without breaking the bank.
