Outdoor Hammock - The Perfect Material To Have If You Need Rest

By Jill Nicholson

Rest, holidays, relaxing, and quietness are among the words that come to mind when one's talks about hammocks. Spending a few hours in relaxation while lingering peacefully in the comfort of your backyard or porch can best be done using outdoor hammocks. Aside from such, hammocks have also been proven to provide a number of health benefits.

Slung by cords from supports at each end, a hammock is a sling - or a swinging bed or couch - usually made from fabric, netting, or canvas. They were widely used by seafarers and discoverers. As such, it is not surprising to learn that hammocks were introduced to the world by Christopher Columbus. Nonetheless, hammocks, according the archeologists, were first invented by the Mayan civilization. Mayans then used these items to protect themselves from snakes, other crawling dwellers, water, dirt, and other unsanitary conditions by elevating themselves off the ground when sleeping.

The term "hammock" was derived from the Hamack tree from which the materials of the first outdoor hammocks were sourced. Throughout the years that followed, the bark of the hamack tree has been replaced by the Sisal plant as the main material for manufacturing it. This was primarily because the Sisal plant grows more abundantly than the hamack. As was aforementioned, Christopher Columbus was the first to "discover" hammocks. He discovered the item in the Caribbean during his journey to the new world. Through extensive trade routes, it was introduced to other parts of the world that they are widely used today as beds or furniture worldwide.

As was aforementioned, a number of advantages may be derived from the use of hammocks. First is their versatile use which allows them to be used in the house, in the garden, or on the terrace. They are also great travel companions especially for campers and mountain hikers where they can stop, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Also, just like during the time of great seafarers and discoverers, hammocks are a great company in ships, boats, or yachts. Also, they usually fit all sizes of people. As such everyone in the family may enjoy the swinging motions of the hammock without needing to purchase one for each member of the family.

Health benefits can also be derived from the use of both indoor and outdoor hammocks. Doctors, for example, widely recommend them to patients suffering chronic pains of the back and leg. This is because hammocks allows one's weight to be distributed over the surface of the body, hence, reducing the amount of weight that rests on the muscles that in turn, reduces back and neck pain. The swinging motion was also proven to affect the cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain responsible for one's concentration. As such, hammocks are also used to increase concentration and focus.

Both indoor and outdoor hammocks are indeed excellent must-have pieces of furniture. Not only are these items excellent to be used to rest, recreate, or relax, they are also great companions that can provide us with a number of health benefits.
