The Many Botswana Holidays Awaiting You

By Sam Jones

Botswana holidays are an excellent choice for anyone who would like to visit Africa. It is a stable country, where all ethnic groups, including the minority whites, have freely been active in regular elections since the 1966 independence. Blessed with 3 diamond mines as well as its tourism industry, Botswana has been one of the most prosperous of African nations, and its GDP has averaged 7% annual growth during its young history.

There is an image in our minds when we think of African wildlife. That image is Botswana: the big predators, lions, hyenas, wild dogs, are here. The wildebeest, buffaloes, and zebras. The huge river animals, like crocodiles and hippos. Rare and beautiful birds. And of course, the monkeys! For under $3000, you can hire a registered safari tour guide for a week-long excursion. Wine and beer are included.

The Moremi Game Preserve is one of the world's most famous. It lies on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, and is known for its geographic diversity, from permanent water to drier grasslands with seasonal pools. You can explore it by foot or jeep, even by canoe. The peak for game viewing is from July to October, because during those months the smaller pools are dried up and the wildlife naturally congregates near the permanent water.

The Chobe National Park is known worldwide for its large elephant population of at least 120,000. With them are buffaloes, antelopes, and the familiar animals that predate upon them. The Chobe is also known for its wonderful bird-watching, especially between November and March, when the migrating birds come to pay their annual visit.

A "pan" is an arid plain that is flooded for several months each year when the rains come. Of these, the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park ranks among the most famous. During the wet months, which run roughly from November to May, the pan can't be reached by road, but it is well worth a fly-over. The water-birds are a spectacle, and they're visited by enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra.

You can begin, and end your visit in the capitol city, Gaborone. Gaborone is the commercial heart of this African success story. With a population upwards of 200,000, it is known as the fast -growing young city in Africa. It makes for a fitting punctuation mark for any one of many possible Botswana holidays.
