The Whole Politics History Of The State Of Israel Since Independence

When Israel was made an independent state in 1948, following WWW II. It became the new home State for the Jewish population displaced during the war. This is commonly referred to as the Zionist movement. Following WWW II the Zionist movement gained enough international support led by Most of Free Europe and the United States.

Immediately after independence David Ben Gurion took the office of Prime Minister and he maintained it for 15 years. The Labor party formed the Government for 29 years from independence. Both population and economy experienced a high growth rate during this period. David was succeeded by Levi Eshkol who belonged to the Herut movement in 1963. After this the Six Day War against Palestine and Egypt erupted. Golda Meir succeeded Levi after he passed away in 1969. When the Yom Kippur War started in 1973 Golda resigned.

In 1974 Yitzhak became prime minister. During his tenure many African countries and the Soviet Bloc broke off relations and agreement to disengage was brokered with Egypt and also Syria.

In 1977 the Lukid bloc defeated the Labor party and was headed by Menachem Begin. Begin reached a peace agreement with Egypt in 1979 that entailed yielding land to Egypt in exchange for peace. Likud's privatization plans got out of control and inflation went up, the stock market crashed. In 1982 Israel there was the Lebanon War which caused resignation of Begin and he was succeeded by Yitzhak Shamir. In 1984 Labor party leader Perez served as prime minister and he was able to curb inflation and stabilize the economy and also withdraw troops from Lebanon.

In 1988 there was the Gaza War and Israel was struck by 39 scud missiles from Iraq. In 1992, under Rabin's leadership the Labor party formed the government. Rabin was a former defense minister.

Palestine was awarded autonomy in 1994 in the West Bank and Gaza strip. Following this a peace treaty was signed with Jordan and international relations with other countries also improved. In 1995 Rabin was assassinated.

A new system of polling called direct election was established in 1996 and Benjamin Netanyahu was elected Prime minister but he later lost in 1999 to Ehud Barak when the Government was dissolved. Ariel Sharon was elected In 2001, and in 2003 a coalition with the US Government invaded Iraq and captured Saddam Hussein.In 2005 he suffered health complications and Ehud Olmert took office.

Benjamin Netanyahu regained the seat in 2007 and is the current Prime minister. Though there is an office of the president the Prime minister holds executive powers.
