Is Your Computer Job Giving You a Pain in the Neck?

By Dr. Michael Weir

Being a Bellevue chiropractor, and after seeing thousands of patients over the years, I have begun to see certain patterns in certain groups of patients. For instance, woman who wear high heels for many years have a VERY high likely hood they will have low back pain. Another one is people who have computer jobs all have very similar neck and back problems, and their necks all have a certain look to them. This has become so common in the city that I practice, Bellevue WA, because of the many computer jobs, that I have coined the term "Bellevue Neck".

The reason for these similarities are very simple. Sitting at a computer puts your body in very poor postures. Now I have a saying that all of my patients know, and its "where you keep your body the most, is where its going to stay". If you keep your body in a poor posture (ie sitting at the computer) its going to get stuck there.

In neurology we call this process plasticity. Think of your spine like a piece of plastic, bend it too far and it will get stuck there. On the positive side of things, you can also bend things back to their normal position with the right treatments.

I have coined the term "Bellevue Neck" for those with straight necks or a loss of neck curve. A lost curve in the neck can cause headaches, neck pain, middle back pain, and even low back pain if it is a bad enough case.

Just this week I had 4 people come to see me with the effects of Bellevue neck. One was having headaches, two were having middle back pain, and the fourth was having pain in her jaw. As a Bellevue chiropractor I assess if you are a candidate for chiropractic care and help reverse the damage that a strait neck has done to your body.
