What To Know About Miniature Schnauzer Puppies

By Lolita Jacobs

Miniature Schnauzer puppies are German-bred terriers. They are the smallest of the three recognized sizes but retain all the similar characteristics. Their original purpose as working farm dogs has help develop their sense of loyalty.

Now mainly used as companion dogs, this German-bred dog was the result of cross breeding the Affinpinscher with a standard Schnauzer. The result was a smaller breed that could be used to chase away rodents. They still carry their born instincts by being able to be used as tracking and hunting dogs.

These boxy dogs are sturdy for their size. Their sharp body features are further expressed with pointed ears that fold down above their head and a long narrow tail. Tail and ear alterations are done in some countries such as the United States. Their double coat has coarse top layer with soft fur underneath. The standard solid colors are black and white. The two toned colored coats are black and silver, and salt and pepper.

Naturally smart and playful this breed have always been mainly a family pet even when used as working dogs. They have a people pleasing attitude that make them a popular breed. In breed standards they should be lively and affectionate. This breed should never be shy or aggressive.

While they are young, it is important to start socializing early, especially if the pet will be around other small animals. Training should also begin early since this breed can be willful. Grooming should become an important part of routine because they will require more intensive grooming as they grow older, especially around the face and leg area.

The average litter size for miniature schnauzer puppies is three to six. They are mainly bred for companionship because they love to please their people. They are robust and lively even well into old age. Their personality and size allow them to be adaptable to living in either a big city or out in the countryside.
