Another excellent example of modern-day Western excitement is Don King Days in Sept. Top-notch cowboys compete in roping, riding and even polo (a fave local sport) to pay respects to the founder of legendary King's Saddlery.

To submerge yourself fully in Western lore, plan to attend the Sagebrush Cowboy Gathering each Feb. Cowboy musicians, poets and storytellers will enthrall with tales of the Wild West. There's something for each age group, including a kid's poetry contest.

Museums, shops and galleries across the Sheridan Wyoming area continue to commemorate the area's rugged Western history. Look for wonderful examples of leather and silver work, particularly.
