Determining Reliable Dental Insurance Plans

By Tom Addison

With more and more employers dropping dental and vision benefits from employer sponsored health plans, this is increasing the amount of people searching out dental insurance plans. Many great plans are easily available to find.

If you plan to visit the dentist often or just visit for emergencies can allow you to make a choice when considering the different policies out there. Many of these insurances will set a yearly maximum benefit amount.

You would be responsible for any charges that go above and beyond the yearly maximum benefit. Many discount programs are out there that allow you to pay a one time yearly fee or set up a monthly payment plan. These types of programs allow you to visit any participating dentist for pre-arranged fees. There are those that have this insurance and are given a couple of choices on policies to choose from.

Managed policies will have you select an office and be placed on their roster as a patient that is assigned to their office for visits. A fee schedule is in place to pay small co-pays for basic work and then larger payments on any major work. These are great options for those that will need a lot of work.

Policies that are of a PPO nature allow you to see any dentist that accepts insurance. There are dentists that contract with specific insurances. These policies give you a maximum yearly benefit. There are usually no fees for cleanings, exams and x-rays. Other services are at a percentage rate. These plans work better for those that do not need a lot of major work.

It is always best to research the policies that would work for your situation. You want to consider the price of the premiums when making your decision. Knowing what is covered and other types of work that would be included can allow you to make the comparison between companies for their rates and what is covered.
