How A Good School Reception Can Be Devised

By Paula Jervis Fitzgerald

First impressions are always important, and a school reception area is more often than not the first place that visitors to a place of learning will encounter. It is well worthwhile educational managers taking some time to ensure that the reception design is properly planned and considered, giving a great impression of a professional and efficient venue which enjoys a healthy and positive atmosphere.

Reception seating is an important factor; visitors do not want to be crammed into a corner, sitting on top of each other, especially not if they are competing for the same job interview. Seating needs to be well-spaced then, as well as comfortable and well-maintained, reinforcing the impression that the institution is a place of space and encouragement, not somewhere people are confined.

It can also be a good idea to man reception desks with responsible pupils, at least as errand runners and helpers to the official staff. This can help give a positive impression of the work that the venue does with young people, showing that they are capable and mature enough to carry out these duties.

Reception counters should also be tidy and welcoming; it can also help if some useful information is displayed on the counter, such as the names of the heads of department, for example.

Reception displays are also an important consideration. Displaying students' work, especially art work, is a good way of both showing the positive outcomes that the school generates as well as providing some colour and vitality to the environment. Using new technology, such as computer or TV screen, to provide news and updates about the institution is also a nice touch, helping to maintain a purposeful and professional atmosphere.

School reception areas provide first points of contact for a whole range of visitors. Managing this type of area should therefore always be a priority for those professionals who are responsible for the fixtures and fittings of the institution.
