Terrorism Preparedness And Survival Equipment

By Eric Holm

Before the 9/11 attack in New York Americans had not experienced what it is like to live in a country where terrorism reigns. In South Africa and other countries terrorism had been experienced for many years. The success of terrorist tactics in some countries may have encouraged the use of bombs and chemicals as a way of achieving political ends, even in America.

At the heart of terrorist tactics is shock. Innocent citizens cannot relax because they are the prey. Like animals living with predators, innocent people must constantly be ready for a shock attack. Alertness and flight are the survival modes of wild animals. Human beings need to develop some of those same qualities. Eyes and ears are the instruments of observation. People need to keep emergency kits as part of their constant vigilance..

All emergency kits, including terrorism preparedness and kits, should contain clean water and food that can last for at least three days and up to three or six months. Even if you get trapped inside your home, you and your family can at least survive for a considerable length of time while rescue is on its way. Aside from food and water, your terrorism emergency kits also need to protect you from the aftereffects of biological, chemical and even, nuclear attacks. You should not take any chances when it comes to your safety and that of your family.

In confines spaces a tactic might be to contaminate the air. This was attempted in Japan when an underground railway was attacked. For such emergencies a gas mask needs t be available. It should be checked to see that it fits and ideally will be available whenever one enters a danger zone such as a crowded space like a church, shop or train. Terrorism emergency kits should be available to children too and in cases where prolonged terrorist attacks occur over periods of many months it could be necessary to have protective suits available to all.

Terrorist attacks aim at creating fear and shock in order to achieve their ends. They need effective communication methods, but communication is also essential for their victims. Torches, whistles and radios will be essential, but such implements can also help the terrorists locate victims in some situations. Perhaps the most important survival techniques, therefore, are contained in the heads of people who have some training in survival methods. It is possible to research a great deal of such information on the Internet where there are sites that will allow people who have a common code of survival for when an emergency occurs.
