Self Guided NYC Tours Provide Personalization

By Juliette Cruz

Self guided NYC tours are a great way to discover one of the most exciting cities in the world. Exploring this way allows tourists to move at their own pace and identify areas of personal interest. Itineraries can be developed to spend more time at chosen attractions and less at others.

New York is known as the cultural capital of the world and as the Crossroads of the World. Both are fitting nicknames for the United States of America's most populous city. It is a global hub for entertainment, fashion, commerce and art. Events that occur there have impacts all over the world.

Five boroughs compose the city. They include Brooklyn, Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island and Queens. Each is considered a state county. Until consolidation in 1898, they were independent entities. The area encompasses a little over three hundred square miles. Over eight million people live in that space making it the USA's most densely populated city.

New York was once known as New Amsterdam when it was founded by Dutch colonists as a trading post. King Charles came to power and renamed it after the Duke of York in 1664. It was the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790.

Cultural attractions pepper the five boroughs. Visitors come each year to see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park and Broadway, to name just a few. The subway system provides transportation 24 hours a day, seven days a week to those who come to work and play.

A popular attraction that is rich in history is The Statue of Liberty. She was created by Frederic Bartholdi and given to the USA as a present from France. A formal presentation was held in New York on October of 1886. The statue is a symbol of freedom and stood watch over the flood of immigrants coming to the USA for a better life.

One of Midtown Manhattan's skyscrapers is the famous Empire State Building. It stands 102 stories tall and was the tallest building in the world until 1931 when it gave up the distinction to the newly completed World Trade Center North Tower. It is on the National Historic Landmark registry and is one of the most visited sights in the city.

Visitors also come to see Central Park and the Broadway Theater District. Central Park is a welcome expanse of green space in an otherwise ultra urban environment. It opened in the mid 1800s and has received designation as a National Historic Landmark. Residents and tourists enjoy the offerings of the park throughout the year. Lovers of theater flock to Broadway to see classics and the season's newest offerings. Actors also come hoping to find their big break on the "Great White Way."

Some research and planning is required of those who wish to undertake self guided NYC tours. Attractions of choice and modes of transport must be decided from the vast available list. A full day of enjoyable sight seeing and learning can be tailored to the individual tastes of a person or group so that the city can be enjoyed to the fullest.
