All The Information About File Storage Systems

By Patrice McCoy

Nowadays people widely use their computers to do most of their work and also in their studies. Despite being of great use, computers can also inconvenience one during the time for storing data. For instance, when hard drives crash, one is likely to lose his/her important files. These are some of the situations people try as much as possible to prevent. This is where alternative file storage systems come in handy.

These storage devices are mostly external devices fitted on the computer to collect data and store it. Also, they can be used to transfer the data from one computer to another. This kind of devices cannot work unless they are inserted into a computer. They include things like external flash drives or disks, compact disks and hard disks.

USB drives are usually devices which are plugged into a computer through the USB port usually found on a computer for them to work. Once they are mounted on the computer, files can easily be transferred from and out of the computer. Normally, they are small in size and also they are different types.

Most people prefer using them since they are very convenient when you want to move around with them. Also, these devices are relatively cheap compared to other devices. One of the shortcomings of these drives is that they are not capable of holding a large amount of data. Furthermore, they can easily be misplaced or stolen since they are very small in size.

External hard disk drives can be used to transfer files from one computer to another. They are easily carried around and usually have a USB port to connect it to a computer using a USB cable. An advantage is that they can carry relatively large amounts of data and are also portable. A disadvantage is that they are relatively costly and may not even fit inside the pockets that are small in size, due to their size.

Zip drives are used to store large amounts of data. They are normally used together with zip disks which are normally removable. They work the same way as floppy disk apart from the fact that you use a zip disk instead of a floppy disk. Zip disks are also larger in size as well as heavier. One advantage of using them is that they can be used to back up your files. They are also relatively light and hence portable.

A CD-RW is another form of external storage device that is both a readable and writable compact disc. This implies that one can store data through data burning, in which case a CD-RW drive is used. These disks are quite cheap and light in weight, hence they are portable. Data can also be overwritten in them hence they can be reused severally. However, they can only hold data of up to 7ooMB only. They also can only work in computers compatible with them.

DVD-RW can sometimes replace CD-RW since they work in more or less the same way. However DVD-RW disks can contain bigger amount of data. Storage of data is done using DVD-RW drive. These are some of the most commonly used file storage systems.
