By Tom Doerr

Lake Windermere is one of the most popular holiday sites in Cumbria in the United Kingdom. It has been so since 1847 when the railway first reached the area. It is situated in a national park, is over ten miles long and, at its widest, a mile wide. The National Trust owns and is responsible for much of the shoreline.

Windermere is long and narrow, being ten and a half miles long and a mile wide. The River Leven drains it from its southernmost point while numerous rivers feed into it. The foothills of the National Park which surround it provide enjoyable walks which are not too challenging. The higher fells of the central Lakeland lie to the north and north-east.

The public has year-round access to the ferry which runs from east to west. Several boating clubs have their homes on the shores. The site has also been the scene of several world water speed records. Water and boating activities are well catered for.

With the imposition of speed limits for boats, the serenity of the area has been restored. Landscaped gardens surround grand mansions and reach to the shores. The mansions were built in the late 19th century by wealthy business men. Some retain centuries old hand-carved fittings and superb antiques. The public can enjoy staying in these fine buildings as several have been converted to hotels.

The Great North Swim takes place there each year, attracting up to 10,000 participants. All levels of experience are catered for with distances varying from half a mile to two miles. The events are run over three days. With such a wonderful venue at hand, there are many boating and swimming competitions held here.

A wide range of activities is available for visitors to the District. Accommodation ranges from self-catering cottages and log cabins to very luxurious hotels. There are hiring facilities for kayaks and bikes. The natural forest and woodlands provide a great number of walks and hiking trails. Stunning views reward those climb some of the nearby hills. A visit to Lake Windermere is sure to be one you won't forget.
