What Can You Expect By Doing A Gap Year Project?

By William Davis

Gap Year South Africa (GYSA) offer fantastic opportunities for groups and individuals to invest their precious time and knowledge into a cause that's both exciting, daring and worthy - serving a deprived & needy community and its people.

Community Service Volunteers

Gap year projects are so tailored that the volunteers are mentored into a perfect member of the community they serve. The responsibility towards the members of the society is a phenomenal one and needs to be performed with the uttermost care and tenderness as personal bonds are formed that would essential last a long time. Gap Year South Africa advances the volunteer into community upliftment projects with the only intention of enhancing the well being of the locals. Community development programs identify the areas of need and actively equip the volunteers to render counter services to the needs, such as education, educational improvement, common health keeping practices, AIDS prevention and many other issues affecting social behaviours.

Diving School Volunteers

In addition to the general community service and upliftment GYSA also offer the chance for volunteers to learn scuba swimming Training is done by qualified professionals - sea water sports like scuba diving is potentially dangerous if not done in a correct way and overseen by an experienced diver. Of course perfecting the art of underwater diving is guaranteed with once per week training training sessions. For the best bit of the story, all volunteers also have a chance to get involved in community service at their local destinations. A service to the society, even as basic as scuba diving, always have a positive effect and it teaches one to be a caring and giving resident rather than being one that's always wanting from others. Therefore by teaching the locals to scuba they gain the experiences in being responsible and learning a practical skill, which has proven to be more effective than classroom teaching.

Coastal projects thus offer the volunteer a wonderful opportunity to not only learn & teach surfing to the locals but most importantly life skills. GYSA have been able to integrate a successful community service plan along with that of a teaching plan. This sort of community service mentors the locals on both education, health worries, PC awareness and other related issues.

The approach of community development and service is a tested and proven model which encourages both the giver and receiver, making undertaking a gap year programme in Africa one of the best experiences you'll ever have.
