By Guy Burbage

A brief history of tattoos is long and colourful. Tattoos are long term markings which are placed on the body. In centuries past a few tattoos were created utilizing the ashes of the dead, as a tribute to the deceased loved one and a way of mourning and remembrance for the person left alive. Since prehistoric times tattoos have been used for several functions, and in almost every region of the world. Many of these markings were voluntary and a few were pressured, and tattoos meant various things during diverse eras and in different populations.

Mummies which go back many thousands of years have been found with tattoos, a few with just a few of these markings bit others that were heavily inked. Going back to before 1,000 BC criminals and unsavory types in China were noticeably tattooed to ensure that everybody recognized these individuals for what they were. This practice wasn't just reserved for people who were low type, many books of Chinese literature describe tattoos which were designed to show loyalty, love, or any other traits.

A brief history of tattoos in several states is a positive one. India, the Philippines, Egypt, the Middle East, Northern Africa, and many other areas of the globe have a long history of tattoos employed for decorating the body or signifying spiritual dedication. Native American Indian tribes often tattooed captured settlers the same way that the tribes tattooed members. These tattoos were considered holy and beautifying.

Native tribes in the Amazon rainforests have already been noticed as recently as just a few years ago, and many of these tribes have members with facial and body tattoos that are plainly visible. In a few regions in the past slaves were tattooed to distinguish the individual as property and specify the owner. This was true in most cultures and didn't happen only to slaves brought from Africa. The practice was common in China and other countries as well.

These markings meant several different things in the past, but these days tattoos are a form of self expression and body art which is widely accepted. Several business executives and wealthy people have more than one tattoos, although these might not be in highly visible places.
