One of the most important things to remember about sun tanning is to not get a sun burn. It is counter productive to your goals, it hurts, and it can lead to serious complications later. Sun tanning should be spread out over several days. Spend only fifteen minutes the first day and increase it up to no more than two hours. The sun is its hottest between 10 AM and 3 PM. So try to no be out during that time or at least stay out for only short periods. If weather does not permit it, then try a sun lamp or sun tanning spa.

Exfoliate your skin before applying your sun tanning products. Your skin will be able to hold the tan longer if you do this first. After spending a day sun tanning, use plenty of moisturizer all over your body to keep the skin from drying out. It will look smooth and show off your tanned skin.

A sun tanning lotion with at least a fifteen SPF should always be used. If you have fair or freckled skin, use a higher number SPF. It is a good idea to apply the sun tanning product to your skin at least thirty minutes before going out. This will allow it time to absorb into the skin. In addition, reapply the product every time you get in and out of the water or participate in activities.

When outside sun tanning, do not forget about your lips, eyelids, and the bottom of your feet. You may not want to tan them but you do need to cover them in order to protect them from getting sunburn. Also drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
