A Good Way to Test Whether Or not you are on The Right Track

By David Ferrers

One of the most inhibiting afflictions from which you can suffer is doubt, a dearth of confidence, not being sure. Doubt is what stops us from taking the action we need to take in order to achieve our objectives.

Feedback is a good way to get that feel of reassurance setting out to do anything. It is one of the NLP techniques taught to all students when we are learning NLP.

Before it is possible to benefit from feedback you have got to decide what it is that you would like to achieve. You can't expect others to do your thinking for you, but you can ask them to comment on whether they think that you are on the right track once you've made up your mind what you think that you would like to do.

During my business career I adopted a process for making choices that I came to depend on because it so regularly ended in good outcomes. It started with analysing the situation before deciding about what to do. When I had a clear idea of where I wanted to get to I set out to develop a strategy to get me there. At the strategy stage I would seek feedback from my mentor who was much older than me and had experienced the majority of the situations in which I found myself.

If my mentor appeared to believe I was going in the right direction I would set the wheels in motion and set out to get a result.

When the job was complete I would seek feedback again, sometimes in the form of research, often in the form of opinion from my peers or superiors. This type of feedback would be stored in my career development file so that it could be used at PDP sessions and job interviews.

I learned that other people were much more impressed by the feedback I had received than they were by my viewpoints of my achievements.
