The Galapagos Islands: a Unique Vacation Experience.

By Austin Thomas

In the Pacific Sea, off the coast of Ecuador, is a group of islands known as the Galapagos. There are 13 big islands, 6 smaller ones, and many islets. The Galapagos are a weird holiday spot if you'd like to experience something fresh , instead of the usual holiday areas. A visit to the Galapagos is actually a noteworthy experience.

History

The Galapagos were first discovered accidentally in 1535. The Bishop of Panama, Tomas de Berlanga, went off course while traveling from Panama to Peru. Galapagos means "Islands of Tortoises," and for 3 centuries were typically used as sanctuary for buccaneers and sailors, due to the ample wildlife.

The Islands came under Ecuador's jurisdiction in 1832. Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos in 1835, picked up samples, and spent time formulating his Idea of Evolution, which was published decades later on. Some of the area was designated as a wildlife refuge in 1934, and in 1959, 97% of area was guarded by being chosen countrywide parks. Today, just about 80,000 people come to the Galapagos Islands each year to experience their wonder.
