Dealing With Acne Problems When You Are Pregnant

By Andrew Cornish

A lot of pregnant women will find that they suffer from acne whenever they carry a baby. This could be a repeat of a problem they had in their younger days when they were a teenager, or it could be the very first time they have ever suffered from acne.

To some extent it is quite normal for people to only suffer from acne when they are pregnant. When they are not pregnant, they may not get acne at any time in their life.

It is generally changes in hormonal levels that cause acne problems to present themselves whenever women get pregnant. This is because they reach peak levels at this time, and it is the reason why so many women suffer from this problem.

A woman's oil glands will often go into overdrive during pregnancy. This can be explained by the fact that androgen and progesterone levels will go up quite a lot during this period. With regards to the acne problem, it is usually most noticeable during the first trimester, and will generally start to look a lot better over the following months.

In terms of appearance, a woman will often develop what's known as a mask of pregnancy. This is where parts of the face become covered with brown pigmentation which often makes the skin looks red, and is simply the result of acne flaring up on the face.

A lot of women are not overly concerned with the flare up of acne that presents itself. Their doctor will probably have told them that this is a common complaint, and it we usually be a short term problem that you have to deal with, rather than a more serious long term problem.

Nevertheless in some cases the acne can be quite severe, and there is a danger that it will leave scars if left untreated. This, however, is quite rare and you generally will not have to take preventative action in a lot of cases.

The good news is that the acne that occurs during pregnancy will nearly always resolve itself over time. In fact acne will usually go away completely before the pregnancy period is over, and will gradually improve as the pregnancy progresses. This is because estrogen levels start to increase during pregnancy.

Subsequently you should not let acne get you down too much because it is simply a part of the whole pregnancy process that you have to live with. It will nearly always clear up by itself, and by the time you give birth to your new baby, you will probably have forgotten that you ever suffered from acne in the first place.
