Company Sold Out Their Principles - Excalibur 3926t Dehydrator Review

By Savannah Hayes

I've dehydrated several batches of garden vegetables so far this season with great success using this machine. Not to mention the high sodium contents and many use monosodium glutamate (MSG)! I found this one to be a good mid-priced dehydrator - it would allow us to make meat jerky, dehydrate fruits and vegetables, as well as make our own fruit roll ups. And if you leave it on anyway and come back later, the jerky will be OVER-dried and inedible. There needs to be a way to program "30 minutes more" so you can go on with your life. The batch was done in 6 hours. I just put a ball of meat in my hand and flattened it into thin circles.

It worked perfectly! With the cost of food going up this little thing is going to save me big money! This works perfectly for all of these items. I was prepared for drying times (about 1 1/2 days for bananas to become chips and crackers to harden). The mesh design of the drying trays (think air circulation) gives a lot of surface area for things to stick to so they just require a little more work. Be warned, when you use this, your home will be filled with the delicious aroma of whatever you are making.

There's a low hum of air, but it's not disruptive. This is obviously not a product for people who want to do industrial-size batches of drying, but it works very well for me as I love to make my own snacks. This is my first dehydrator and I simply love it. I researched several other products before deciding on this one and I could not be happier.

I marinated my meat the night I got my dehydrator in the mail and used it the next day. Even though this was my first time making jerky it came out great!

I absolutely love the Nesco dehydrator. My old dehydrator had heat coils on the bottom and this one has the heat and fan on the top of the trays.

I typically load this thing full, using 12 trays (purchased 7 extra trays). So, it sometimes takes a tad longer to dry than with only 5 trays, but it works great. When I started thinking about purchasing a dehydrator, I did a lot of research including visiting my local Cabelas store and doing a lot of online research. The main reason that I initially shied away from purchasing this model was how inexpensive it was compared to so many of the other models. After investing $40 in the Ronco dehydrator, I must say that the Nesco beats Ronco hands down. Very little tray rotation is required. Even if you are only using two trays, it is suggested that you keep all five in the unit for efficiency and faster dehydration. The design is fairly space efficient, although normally it is stored in a cabinet when not in use.
