OSHA 10 Training Revisions

By Cyger Manni

OSHA 10 is the most popular course offered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This is a foundation course for many workers, and a requirement in a number of states. Now, OSHA certification has updated some of their policy "guidelines." What was formerly known as "guidelines" has been strengthened to be now referred to as "requirements" of the OSHA 10 course.

OSHA training instructors must now affirm they are complying with the requirements and procedures. What's more class size has been reduced from the maximum allowable of 50 down to 40. Translators must now also have experience in safety and health issues. Additionally, OSHA is providing military members additional time to renew their trainer authorization.

OSHA has been sensitive to complaints of cards being delivered months later or not at all. Now, all trainers must issue cards within 90 days of class completion. What's more, students are entitled to receive the cards directly if they so desire. In the past, some employers required cards to be sent directly to the company, holding hostage the cards.

The OSHA 10 class curriculum has also changed. All construction classes are required to include four hours on Focus Four Hazards. The Focus Four Hazards account for the greatest number of preventable fatalities that occur in the construction industry.

OSHA has made other recent changes to this course, most notably requiring that the OSHA 10 training be conducted over a minimum of two days with no more than 7.5 hours or less than 2.5 hours of safety training in one day. OSHA had responded to the criticism that trying to absorb ten hours of safety training in one day made for a poor training experience. Other critics now complain that the cost of providing the OSHA 10 training has increased substantially now that a trainer may be required over a two day period versus one day in the past. Nonetheless, compliance with this new requirements seems almost universal. Remember, there are very few exceptions that OSHA will approve for one day training programs, and economic hardship is not one of those reasons.

The OSHA 10 class is the most popular safety training class around. Students can attend live instructor led classes, or go online to find OSHA authorized classes for online distribution. OSHA 10 cards are issued for both types of training, and there is no distinction made between the two types of training.
