Distilled Water and Your Humidor

By Harrison Hyde

There is a lot more to being a cigar collector than simply buying cigars. If you are a serious cigar smoker, you will also need to purchase cigar accessories. Accessories are not just important because they build up an image. They actually allow you to make sure that you are treating the cigars that you purchase with the best care. When you consider how much money you can spend on cigars, it only makes sense that you should treat them with care so that you can get the most out of your purchases.

You might be wondering why you have to purchase a humidor in order to keep your cigars lasting for a long period of time. The reason is because humidors come equipped with humidifiers that control the amount of moisture that the cigars are exposed to. If a cigar is exposed to air that is too moist or too dry, it could be very detrimental to the state of the cigar itself. By controlling the air with a humidifier, you will be keeping your cigars stored at the ideal moisture level so that you can enjoy them for a long time.

Humidors control the amount of moisture that cigars are exposed to through the use of a humidification element. When you purchase humidors, you can actually control the amount of moisture that they put out in the air inside. You will need to fill up the humidification elements with water so that the humidors have a way to put moisture into the air inside them. However, not just any water will do.

Some people think that you can place tap water in your humidor's humidifier. However, this is not the case. Tap water can be very bad for the cigars that you are storing. The problem with tap water is that it contains trace minerals and chemicals that can damage the taste and consistency of your cigars.

Distilled water is the best way to moisturize the air in humidors. The reason distilled water is so ideal is because it does not have the same minerals and chemicals that are found in tap water. Distilled water is very clean and it makes it much easier for you to control the moisture level your cigars are exposed to. You can actually find distilled water at your local grocery stores and department stores. As for humidors, you can find them in a number of ways. You can shop around both in stores and on the Internet.
