How to Get Rid of Hormonal Acne

By Hari Nadwa

Hormonal acne is a kind of acne which usually occurs due to hormonal imbalances in the body. It is an androgenic disorder which means it is set off by the effects of hormones called androgens. These include testosterone, DHEA'S and others.

The first event leading to acne is the stimulation of sebaceous glands by testosterone. And then the pores get clogged with oil trapped inside leading to bacterial growth in the oil, which causes infection like visible as acne.

Acne can occur at anytime but most particularly it is seen in particular phases of life out of which the most common phase of occurrence of acne is during adolescence.

However, adult acne is also increasingly common and much like adolescent acne but less in nature usually. More commonly adult women are vulnerable to acne than men. This is because ofcourse women undergo many phases of hormonal changes through out their life starting with their menses followed by many years of menstruation along with fluctuation of their hormonal levels every month and then followed by pregnancies up to menopause. So any of these phases can lead to hormonal imbalance and aflare new acne again.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a very common female hormonal disorder. The main features of this syndrome are acne, increased facial and body hair, and scalp hair thinning. Other features include irregular periods, difficulty in controlling weight and metabolic changes. If you have any of these features, a complete check up for PCOS is advisable and on confirmation a treatment directed for PCOS will be effective even on acne reduction.

If the standard treatments of acne like that of keeping the face clean by using cleansers or home remedies like application of lemon juice or tomato pulp or honey with cinnamon or tea tree oil or products with Benzoyl peroxide of 5% concentration on face and sufficient water intake do not bring improvement in your acne reduction then a hormonal test for acne must be done, which consists of measuring androgens to see if elevated levels are involved in producing acne. Such an evaluation is of good use incase of severe acne along with irregular periods and hair fall that is not controlled by dermatological medication.

Thus when the standard methods of natural acne treatments do not affect in curing the problem, a treatment directed towards the hormonal cause will certainly bring an improvement in acne problem.
