Top Destinations for City Breaks in Winter

By Yasmin L. Houghton

Many people can find winter a bit tiring. Whether it's the fact that Christmas can become quite stale because the excitement seems too rehearsed or because the long nights make getting out and about undesirable, many people can't wait for spring to begin. A quick city break away during December is the perfect way to inject a little excitement into your life.

While you'll still have to wrap up warm if you head to Prague you can get cosy inside a bohemian bar and enjoy some fine Czech beer. But that's only if you allow yourself time to see the world's largest ancient castle, which is truly magnificent, and wonder at the general beauty of the city. The locals say it's so beauty Hitler didn't have the heart to bomb it during the war, and you might find yourself agreeing with them. Culture vultures will be ecstatic with the number of concerts constantly being performed throughout the city, and amazed by the splendour of the National Theatre.

New York City is a wonderful place to visit any time of year, but in the run up to Christmas it's magical. There's always a chance it might snow in winter, so pack accordingly. Famous department stores like Macy's and Bloomingdales have decorations to rival traditional tourist destinations such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. Ice-skating at the Rockerfeller Centre can't help but conjure memories of films such as Home Alone 2 and Elf helping you feel like part of a Christmas tradition you just can't experience at home.

Another great city to visit during the winter months is Rome. Warmer than New York and Prague, but definitely not reaching the uncomfortable heats of summertime, the sights of this ancient city are a joy to behold at any time of year. Depending on when you go in winter you can find fantastic deals and see sights such as the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain and Vatican without quite so many crowds.

While prices do tend to be high around Christmas and New Year, you're certain never to forget such a trip. These are just a few fantastic cities to choose from but if you're not too picky you can find great last minute deals to get you up, up and away.
