Port Ghalib Ready To Improve Southern Red Sea Tourism

By Rob Atherton

Port Ghalib is only ten minutes from Marsa Alam airport and it is a destination with massive aspirations. Situated on the Red Sea in Southern Egypt, the master plan is build a world class integrated resort community. The centre piece will be the marina that'll be capable of handling more than 1,000 boats.

It is also well-known to scuba divers who travel here to catch their liveaboards that head out from from Port Ghalib. The unspoilt coral reefs feature some fantastic scuba diving along the coastline with the well-known Elphinestone Reef to the south being a very popular scuba diving destination.

It is also making its mark in the entertainment world. In 2009, Beyonce performed here as part of her "I am..." tour. It had been the 1st time the super star had played in The Red Sea or the Middle East and her appearance was very successful. Getting world stars such as Beyonce underlines the desire of Port Ghalib to make their name identified around the planet. Of course, it's improbable that personalities such as Beyonce are going to be there every week but there are still other activities for visitors to do if they prefer a touch of adventure to relaxing in the sun.

As stated, Port Ghalib is a starting point for a good number of of the southern Red Sea liveaboard cruise trips. Day boats also operate from there. There are various superb dive sites along the coast from Marsa Alam and in contrast to the more popular resorts of Hurghada and Sharm, there are hardly any dive boats in the area consequently normally your party will be the only people at the dive site. Abu Dabab is a well known shore dive destination towards the south. People come in to witness the turtles feeding on the sea grass and if they are lucky, the resident Dugong may also show up. Abu Dabab is reasonably shallow so snorkellers can also come along too.

For non-divers, a variety of aquatic sports can be found or you're able to only spend the days sun bathing. Trips are also available to Luxor, Cairo, the age-old town of El Quseir or even a camel trading market.
