Guidelines When Using a Sauna

By Joseph Coler

You may find saunas in small chambers or in big establishments where individuals could encounter wet or dry sessions of heat, in which the main purpose is to promote sweating through steam production. A lot of people are aware of the many health advantages presented by saunas; hence this post discusses several pieces of advice when staying in this kind of bathhouse.

1. Heat
Before you could totally enjoy the heat offered by steam saunas, you must wait for 30 minutes before they could reach a desired temperature. Because being able to perspire is one of the reasons of your visit, it is important that saunas are suitably heated before you begin.

2. Two Showers
There are two reasons why you need to take hot and cold showers, respectively, when visiting saunas. Firstly, a hot shower is needed prior the beginning of a session in order for you to easily perspire later on. Subsequently, it is recommended that your entire body progressively cools down prior to immersing in a pool or taking a cold shower.

3. Hygiene
Remember that sauna facilities in gyms or other public establishments are used by many people each day. Hence, ensure that you sit on a towel to emphasize cleanliness.

4. Shelter from Excessive Heat
While your body may feel at peace with the amount of heat experienced in saunas, yet you could not expect your head or face to feel the same way as both of these are sensitive body parts. So you can take care of this by wearing a banya hat, a headwear typically worn in Russia, or placing a towel on your head.

5. To Increase Sweating
For more perspiration and increased room humidity, it is suggested that more water is emptied on the heater. The areas that are distant from the heater elements as well as the lowest bench are generally the coolest places in saunas, so if you want to perspire more, do not sit near these places. Finally, you could lie on a bench if you want to achieve a more equal body temperature, but ensure that there are only a small number of people around you.
