Come Experience Shannonvale Tropical Winery

By Anton Maverick

North of Cairns in Far North Queensland, you can take one of the most pretty drives in the world, and head towards Port Douglas with Campervan Hire Australia. If you keep going north past the Port Douglas turnoff and head to Mossman, you'll come to another turnoff which may take you up to Shannonvale Tropical Winery. You must plan to spend a few hours (at least) tasting these beautiful tropical wines.

As well as the winery, Shannonvale have their own orchard of tropical fruits, including some you may never have even heard about, for example mangosteens, jaboticaba and black sapote. The commercial grade wines go from dry wines to Ports and they are all of the tropical variety, and only for the added touch, the fruits are all naturally grown.

The wines, while made of tropical fruits, are not sweetly or sticky. There are two mango wines, a light dry and a medium sweet and there aren't any other fruits added. The pineapple wine is a medium sweet as is the passionfruit, which has been compared with a savingon blanc but with a passionfruit flavour. There is also a jaboticaba, which resembles a full red and lastly, a ginger wine.

The ports are quite special and there are some engaging mixtures of flavours. Tropical ports can also be enjoyed chilled. The ports include an Orange Liqueur, Purple Mangosteen (creamy port), Kiffir Lime, Jaboticaba (Amazon Tree Grape), Grapfruit, Black Sapote, Vanilla, Chocolate and Ginger. These are unique ports and are actually quite fantastic. Chilling them first seems to further bring out the flavours.

A visit to Shannovale Tropical Winery is a complete must if you are visiting Far North Queensland and the visit will compliment the surprising vistas you'll enjoy on the drive up and back from Cairns. Make sure to take a bottle or two home with you to enjoy during the rest of your holiday.
