By Eduardo Astino

Did you know that your current number plate can be replaced with a personalised number plate, to help your car stand out on the UK roads? The DVLA provides a UK wide services that enables this to happen, it is however a UK legal requirement to inform the DVLA should you wish to change your car to have a more personalised plate.

The DVLA is the main place in the UK that is responsible for maintaining all records for vehicle owner. The DVLA has strong links with the department of transport and helps with aspects such as driving licences and vehicle registrations. If you want to add a new registration plate to your car then you have to notify the DVLA and send your V5 document to them for amending on their records

A private registration is a great present and really helps to personalise your vehicle, and give it that extra touch of you. These days there are lots of affordable private plate solutions either through the DVLA or through number plate websites that make it very easy to search for your desirable plate.

Every plate is of course different and you should complete plenty of research to find the combination that suits you. Whether it's your name, the name of the one you love, or perhaps something fun there is a plate to suit every different taste.

When you have found that perfect registration you must inform the DVLA before placing the new reg on your car. Failure to inform the DVLA would lead to your documentation being invalid and a hefty fine landing through your door, therefore it is better to be safe and inform the DVLA immediately.

If you are sending documentation for the DVLA to change the records please ensure that these documents are sent recorded delivery. This helps make sure that the DVLA receives the important documents and that they don't get lost in transit
