The Fable Of The Teddy Bear And The Gift Flowers: Soul-Stirring Traditions Of Gift-Giving Observed And Kept Alive Through The Years

By Cindy Ingram

Nowadays, teddy bears and flowers are favorite presents for any function. At a baby christening, a lovable stuffed toy is given. It is a box of sterling roses for a wedding anniversary. A stuffed teddy bear and flowers combo marks a birthday. A sweetheart will enjoy cuddling with a man-sized stuffed Koala while holding her box of pink roses. A teddy bear for him and her, with a pot of chrysanthemums make a perfect housewarming gift.

Special occasions are not even needed in order to give bears and flowers as gifts. One simply gives bears and flowers to show love, gratitude, surprise, even condolences and get-well-soon wishes. The tradition of giving gifts traces its beginnings to the birth of the human race. According to history, gifts were first off employed for bartering possessions. Giving away landed estates as a form of inheritance was likewise considered as a form of gift-giving. Gifts exchanged by the upper strata of society expressed gratitude, renewed friendships or earned favors.

Gifts also have subliminal meanings. The Ancient Romans gave coins to mean successfulness, lamps for enlightenment during one's journey through life, and pastries for happiness. The Baby Jesus was gifted by the Three Wise Men with gifts of myrrh, frankincense and gold. The egg, when passed on as a gift, stood for fertility, according to Persian culture. Flowers as presents also cover a gamut of meanings involving love, sincerity, strength of character, etc. etc. Teddy bears symbolize nurture and care. Feelings of warmth are also stirred by these lovable stuffed toys.

Flowers given as gifts started early on. Floral fossils have been found in olden grave sites. Chronicles about giving flowers as gifts are also aplenty in Egyptian hieroglyphics, very old Chinese writings and even ancient Greek and Roman mythology. Early civilizations considered giving flowers as an efficient means of putting across opinions, ideas and emotions. Flowers were seen by the Ancient Greeks as affiliated with the divine. All throughout the Middle Ages, the tradition of giving flowers was kept strong. The practice of giving flowers as gifts was kept alive by the French and the English, too.

The inspiration for the teddy bear was a hunting incident involving former United States President Theodore Roosevelt. It was 1902, and the former President was invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino to go hunting. Several attendants of President Roosevelt tied a black bear to a willow tree and asked the President to shoot it. However, the President declined, thinking it was very unsportsmanlike. The bear was still shot though, upon his orders, to free it of its misery. A political cartoon was made out of this incident.

This political cartoon then inspired Morris Michton to create a novel toy. The new plaything was a stuffed bear cub. He named his new toy Teddy's bear, to honor President Roosevelt, whose nickname was Teddy. Mr Michton sent out a sample of his creation to the President and received permission to utilise his name. In Germany, a stuffed bear was also produced from the designs of Richard Steiff. The 1903 edition of the Leipzig Toy Fair, held in March, featured these toys. Come 1906, the teddy bear rage became full-fledged. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Indeed, the custom of presenting teddy bears and flowers as presents endures. And did you know that there is a rose named Teddy Bear?
