Mental Arithmetic For Kids

By Sam Roxas

I bet that majority of studying kids hate their Mathematics or Arithmetic class. This is not surprising because math really is a very difficult and hard subject. Thats why its important to teach your kids mental arithmetic as soon as possible.

Mental arithmetic is a process or strategy wherein a person can work out a mathematical equation without using a pen and a paper or a calculator. And we arent talking about simple equations either.

The method of mental arithmetic is closely linked to speed learning. To solve mathematical equations mentally, you want to use certain strategies that are also employed in speed learning.

If you aren't acquainted with it, speed learning is a learning strategy whereby someone gets, processes and remembers new information in a rate thats faster than most people.

Now, mental arithmetic isnt truly as complex or hard as it sounds, particularly, if you begin to learn about this process at an early age.

Some individuals think that mental arithmetic is a far too complicated process for kids. People think that small children will have a hell of a time understanding the ideas of mental arithmetic. But in reality the earlier that somebody starts mental arithmetic lessons, the speedier they can master all the talents that they require.

You see, based on recent systematic discoveries on the human brain, the most suitable time for a child to get familiarised with writing and reading numbers is from late kindergarten to the 1st 2 years of elementary school. In this stage, they can already effectively grasp mathematical concepts.

The human brain also develops the most during the first 8 years of our lives. At age 3, the brain grows by sixty percent and this is when the brain has the most powerful potential to absorb new info.

Now, when a kid is at the age of three to six years old, the brain would have grown 20% more. Although its not at its prime any longer, this is still a very good time to build the learning foundations of your child.

When a child reaches the age of six to eight years old, his brain would have grown ten percent more.

But it is important to keep in mind the older your children get, the more difficult it is for them to learn faster. They would work harder and develop more discipline to appreciate different mathematical ideas.

If you're thinking of enrolling your kids into a mental arithmetic program, you must do so during this stage as the demands or work at school is not that tough yet.

Except for quicker computing abilities, your child will also develop logical reasoning and photographic memory. Mental arithmetic also helps your child to work on a specified task longer and better. And the more your kid learns about mental arithmetic, the more that he can expand his attention span.

A child who develops mental arithmetic skills also has an augmented capability to remember different things faster. And to top that all off, mental arithmetic can help a kid be more self-confident.
