Sun Peaks Community Ski Resort Offers A Lot For Visitors

By Marsha Silva

Sun Peaks community BC is a newly created resort situated in Canada. Being the third largest ski resort in the country and the largest in British Columbia, it is becoming a popular holiday destination. Situated only 35 miles to the North of Kamloops, it is a good competitor with the other of British Columbia's resorts. There are a wide variety of summer activities that you can take part in. Two mountains boarder the resort, it is a great place to relax and unwind or even be active and exercise.

Sun Peaks became Canada's first mountain resort municipality in June 2010. The permanent residents number less than 500. This community intends to keep growth under suitable control so that they can become a favored tourist attraction.

The average annual snowfall is about 18 feet or 5.5 meters. This and the variety of gradients offered by the Morrisey, Tod, and Sundance Mountains makes it a paradise for ski enthusiasts be they beginner or advanced. The vertical drop of 2,894 feet or 882 meters puts this resort in the rankings of Americas best. A nine acre terrain park is also available for snow boarders and daring skiers.

Golf and mountain biking are two of the summer time activities on offer. The golf course is situated in the valley with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Lift access to downhill mountain biking trails is in place. For the less courageous there are farmers and community markets every week where one can browse the art and craft work of the local people.

There is an increasing demand for cheaper housing for the local employees. This critically affects the performance of the resort. More accommodation for a larger amount of visitors is also needed for the resort to grow.

The access to the area must also be improved. A couple of airlines provide flights in Seattle, and the drive from the east is much longer than it needs to be and could be reduced greatly with a new access road. This causes a hindrance to visitors from Banff and Lake Louise.

Al Raine, who is the first mayor of this Sun Peaks community municipality, has a hard job ahead of him. He needs to develop the town of Whistler to attract more tourists and permanent residents. His wife is actually an Olympic skier who's already won the Gold medal in the Olympic Games. She actually skis with visitors during her free time. Read more about: Sun Peaks Community
