Things To Consider For Tank Construction

By Megan Landry

When it comes to tank construction, a number of factors need to be put into perspective. One of those factors is the location as well as the size of the vessel you are looking forward to construct. You are supposed to determine if there is enough space for your tank and if there is any limitations hindering you to establish it. For a limited space, a vessel that has a small diameter and tall height is appropriate.

The volume and the type of commodity that will be stored in the vessel can also dictate the material to use for tanks building. For tanks that will hold heavy and voluminous commodities, they are supposed to be large and made of materials such as concrete of field welded steel. However, if a vessel is meant for light and less voluminous commodities, small composite tanks such as ones made of plastic, fiberglass and factory welded steel are appropriate.

The weather conditions of a certain area will also have impact on the tanks that can be brought up. How strong wind loads, roof loads, and seismic conditions are really matters while you are constructing tanks. If your tanks are to be established in regions where wind loads are high and seismic activity is greater, they need be shorter and wide in height and diameter respectively.

You are also supposed to determine whether as the business grows the vessel will be required to be moved or expanded. If there will be need of an expansion in the future, you should build an original foundation and a lower portion that is strong enough to accommodate vertical extension. In terms of movement, bolted tanks should be used.

The other crucial factor to consider is the coating of the tank. Coating is important since it prevents the corrosion of a vessel and should therefore be applied thoroughly to ensure that every corner is coated. Not even a spot should be missed. Some other technologically advanced coatings are meant for other purpose such as to assist this vessel withstand cold weather, high heat, and extreme PH values. However, you are supposed to consider if the coating chemical used is safe for commodities stored.

The other important factor to put into consideration is the cost review of the tanks. Needless to say, a person is supposed to compare the upfront cost of establishing the vessel. This will include the cost of material used for construction, labor, roofing and coating. However, a complete review of cost will also cater for maintenance and the construction cycle. In most cases, those tanks that require a huge amount of capital will not necessitate a lot of maintenance cost in the future.

The experience the builders should also be considered while building tanks. A person who has been building tanks for a long time is deemed to understand all the salient issues of construction. They will inform you in details these vessels.

Other features as follows should also be considered for tank construction. Such features include the inlet, outlet, roofing, discharge nozzles and vents. Perimeter guardrails, liquid indicators, man ways for roofs or side, ladder and many others should be factored in.
