Update - Moholoholo Wildlife Rehab Centre in Hoedspruit, South Africa

By Carl Drotsky

During the course of the past 2.5 months, we have had eight leopards come into our Rehab Centre that is located in South Africa Hoedspruit. With the ever worsening issues involving problem animals lately, the 1st response is to shoot them on sight. Via the untiring efforts of one Brian Jones and his committed collection of staff and volunteers, the neighborhood folks have opened their arms to the idea of catch and release.

While there are not nearly enough farmers and agriculturalists on board and involved in this process, education continues. These teachings have reached as far as Middleburg from which we have received no less than two leopards in a few weeks.

So far 2 leopards have been released on Game Reserves and the other 6 are still with us. The team is working hard to relocate 4 more leopards to Malawi, Africa where 4 have already been sent at great expense but you cannot put a price on freedom. Dwindling available release sites mean we must stretch further afield.

A resident cheetah baby that is only 5 weeks old, is in desperate need of surgery due to a deformity in his oesophagus. This means he has great trouble keeping down his milk.

Our three new baby lionesses under went a health check up on the 21st of August. With the ever present loss of our ambassador Cheetahs, Jolly and Juba, Brian decided that while the cubs were sedated that we should also have them TB tested. The students got a very close look at the three cubs because it was crucial that we needed three teams for three cubs. With arms and legs moving with speed all three cubs got a clean bill of health. They also got weighed but had to wait three days for the TB test results.
