The Characteristics Of High Functioning Autism

By Julio Knebel

Individuals with high functioning autism are often of above average intelligence. The areas where they experience problems are in socializing and communicating. There is a possibility that serious issues only arise once they are in a school situation. Symptoms may not really be noticed before this.

There is some debate over the terms used for conditions like this. Whatever the term used, the fact is that with conditions like Asperger's social skills are affected. The individual may be obviously intelligent but just as obviously unable to interact socially or converse properly with others. They do not understand the social norms necessary for interaction.

They do not recognize verbal or non verbal cues or understand social norms. For example, they may either stare or not make eye contact at all. They may have no idea that they are invading the personal space of the other person as they are unable to read facial expressions and body language. They do not understand the give-and-take of conversation.

These children show repetitive behavior patterns, interests and activities. They become intensely focused on specific items and will obsess over how things work, often becoming preoccupied with parts of objects. They will follow specific routines or rituals and will repeat motions such as twisting their fingers.

These individuals are often very sensitive to certain stimuli. Smells, textures and sounds which others do not even notice may affect them. They may not want to eat something because of its smell. They may not want to be touched because of how it makes them feel. Flashing lights or certain sounds could disturb them.

With this lack of social skills, it is very difficult for them to make and keep any friends. They are regarded as misfits and often suffer rejection as they are misunderstood. This can cause them to feel alone and depressed.

Ignoring or denying that your child may have a problem of this nature prevents him or her from receiving the assistance and support so badly needed. If your child is demonstrating a real problem with social skills autism spectrum disorders are a possibility. Getting a diagnosis is the first step towards dealing with such a condition.

It is essential that an expert be consulted for a diagnosis. Appropriate tests are done, an extensive medical history is taken and behavior is closely observed for a diagnosis is made. Any other conditions which could cause similar issues are eliminated first.

A child with high functioning autism may be intelligent but finds relationships incredibly challenging. In order to get the best chance of a relatively normal life, various therapies and medications can make a difference. The whole family involved in the situation will benefit from gaining more understanding about the condition.
