The Importance Of Pre-Planning In Designing Company Brands

By Matthew Witherspoon

The symbols that represent company identity all came from scratch. Brand designers simply need to undertake a pre-planning procedure so they can obtain as much information about their client companies. The more information they obtain, the more they can conceptualize a design that best represents their client's mission statements.

The most feasible way of acquiring company information that is relevant to brand designing is to prepare a questionnaire. A well-prepared questionnaire can actually yield helpful information and provide positive impressions to clients as well. Designers could use the following categories as their guide in making the questionnaire: the company's previous logo, the company's expectations, the company's competitors, and the facilitation.

Designers will know why the company decided to review their current identification system by asking questions about their previous logo. The answer that the company will provide serve as the primary basis of what to emphasize in the succeeding stages of designing the company logo. Designers may also ask if the company intends a minor or major redesigning of their present logo and the qualities that it likes and does not like about its present logo.

In terms of determining company's expectations, designers may ask about the results the company wants to see from their new product identification system. The process of looking for things that are inherent to the company, such as equipment for product manufacturing, can be integrated in the logo design. Moreover, designers should determine the characteristic (e.g. simple, sophisticated, etc.) that the company wants for its logo.

It is also equally crucial to study the competitor's logo design. Originality and uniqueness is crucial in making a company logo easily recognizable. Designers should also read some of the competitor's marketing collaterals. This will help designers understand the symbols that the competitor chooses to represent its company identity.

Brand exposure means using various promotional tools. Hence, designers need to ask the client of the promotional media they are planning to use. This is to ensure that the designer creates a design that is flexible enough to fit the standards of various promotional tools, such as print and web.
