Folks from all over the United States and abroad love to visit Florida to get a break from nasty winter weather, to enjoy the sun and sand of the beaches and to experience a unique cultural blend that can be seen. Known for it's warm climate and sunny beaches, South Florida and its main city of Miami are particularly popular destinations. With the great variety of places to see in Miami, this city on the coast is a place that is not to be missed.

South Beach and Miami Beach are iconic locations in this coastal city and are certainly worth a visit, but a lesser-known spot to consider is Star Island. Located within Miami Beach, this artificial island contains a number of huge homes, many of which are owned by musicians, professional athletes and other celebrities. Many find this an interesting way to do a bit of sightseeing for free.

A host of activities are available for the more active-minded visitors as well. Oleta River State Recreation Park offers opportunities for biking, swimming, canoeing and kayaking and there are also grills for barbecuing and cabins for those who wish to spend the night. In various places along the coast opportunities abound for scuba diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing.

Those looking for a more cultural experience may wish to check out some of the many museums in the city. Some options for art lovers are the Miami Art Museum, the Wolfsonian Museum, the Frost Art Museum and the Lowe Art Museum. These offer a wide range of different types of art from various periods and places around the globe. The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a vast estate with art and historic furnishings in the main house in addition to the surrounding gardens.

The unique blend of cultures is something to be experienced as well. Little Havana is world-famous for it's decidedly Cuban atmosphere and is the closest many will get to knowing the culture of Cuba. For a more Caribbean atmosphere one can go to Little Haiti for another unique experience.

Each of the three major professional sports leagues have a team based in the city and offer a chance to watch a high level of competition. The Heat of the National Basketball Association play in American Airlines Arena and Miami's Major League Baseball franchise, the Marlins, play in the aptly-named Marlins Park. Fans of the National Football League can try to catch a Dolphin's game at Sun Life Stadium.

Everglades National Park is perhaps the ultimate destination in the metropolitan area. One can take a boat tour of this swampland in hopes of spotting the famous alligators that live here as well as a huge number of other unique types of fauna and flora. One can also camp, hike and fish in various places in the park.

These are just a few of the many places to see in Miami. Visitors to this southern Florida city will certainly not be left wanting for places to go and things to do in any time of the year.
