Latin America Travel Tips For A More Comfortable Trip

By Hans Gerhard

Latin America travel can take tourists to many beautiful places. However, traveling in these countries differs significantly from a trip across Europe or the USA. Without proper preparation the trip can be uncomfortable, stressful and even unpleasant. With planning the vacation can be relaxing and comfortable.

Planning for a comfortable trip must include how one's bags are packed. Luggage should be kept light, especially if planning on visiting several locations. Consider if each item is necessary before packing it. Try to get by with only two pairs of shoes, an older pair that is comfortable and well broken in for daytime walking in the streets and a lightweight sandal for the evenings.

Choose sturdy, yet lightweight luggage. It needs to withstand the tossing around that happens in bus and train stations as well as airports. If luggage is in poor shape, consider replacing it before leaving for the trip. While cheap items are available when traveling, they normally do not last long.

Be sure to have all vaccinations up to date well before leaving on the trip. Some take a few weeks to develop the immunity needed. Check to see if the countries being visited require a vaccination certificate before entry.

Travelers should bring sunscreen as well as insect repellant. Sunscreens should be high SPF, especially if visiting higher elevations. Choose DEET containing insect repellants to prevent bites that spread diseases including dengue, yellow fever and malaria. Avoid insect exposure when possible.

Make sure all electronic devices are compatible with the voltage and frequency where they are to be used. Either take or plan to buy an electrical adapter upon arrival in the location. Some devices may require a power converter as well as a plug adapter. While many laptops and other electronics are designed to work with many different currents, be sure to check. Internet cafes are an inexpensive option and can reduce the chance of damaged or lost electronics while traveling. If at all possible, avoid taking electronics as they can make the luggage much heavier for the trip.

Carry toilet tissue with you every day. Many toilets in the region do not provide tissue. Taking a supply from the hotel room ensures you have this necessity when needed. It can also be used for stuffed noses common with colds from the higher altitude.

Layer the clothing for greatest comfort throughout the day. Nights and early mornings can be chilly while afternoons are quite warm. Be sure to take a lightweight raincoat so an occasional cloudburst does not ruin the day. Long sleeved t-shirts and light jackets are a good choice for layering clothes that can easily be removed.

Take precautions with any valuables on the trip. Make use of the hotel safe whenever possible. Keep valuable items out of sight on the streets. Use a money belt to prevent someone from picking your pocket. Keep passports and cash secured inside the belt and on your person at all times.

The beauty of the area cannot be captured in photos but is something that is only experienced through Latin America travel. With proper planning the trip can be fun and enjoyable. It can be your vacation of a lifetime.
