How To Select The Ideal Thailand Hotels For Your Trip

By Alan Wilson

The Land of Smiles has long been a favorite holiday destination. Fantastic food, beautiful temples, fascinating culture, clear blue ocean and white sand beaches, jungle and relaxing spas to retreat to, combined with a tropical climate, have all contributed to the growth of the country's thriving tourism industry. There is no shortage of Thailand hotels to stay at either and you'll find something in every price range.

Formerly part of Indochina, the Kingdom of Thailand is situated in South-East Asia. The local currency here is known as the baht and the official language is Thai. However, many Thais can speak basic English too, particularly in popular tourist areas like Bangkok and the island of Phuket.

Bangkok is the kingdom's famous or, depending on how you look at it, infamous capital city. The Thai call this bustling city Krung Thep. While many people associate the city with its red-light district, there is much more to Bangkok. Here you will find anything from colorful markets and ancient temples to glitzy malls and modern skyscrapers.

The best way to go about finding Bangkok hotels in Thailand is to look at one or two districts only. The Khao San Road offers the cheapest accommodation and this is where backpackers congregate. More upmarket is the accommodation in Siam Square or Sukhumvit, where you'll be close to the nightlife, markets and shoppers' paradise. Silom has very expensive options if you want to be out and about at night, while Thonburi has luxurious riverside accommodation near attractions like the floating markets.

If a beach holiday in Thailand is more your thing, you're likely to spend at least a few days on Phuket. From this island in the south of the country, you can travel to many other beach destinations. With its beaches, spas and jungle, Phuket is also a destination in itself.

The western part of the island is the most developed and you'll find most Phuket hotels at the beaches in this region. Patong is known for its nightlife, while Karong and Kata are well-developed tourist beaches too. If you prefer something a little quieter, try finding accommodation in the south-eastern part of Phuket or in the interior.

Most tourists plan their Thailand holidays to fall in the cool season, roughly from November to February. During these months you should book in advance. For a beach holiday, you may find the period from March to June a better option. Temperatures are very high, but you may save on accommodation costs and you'll escape the crowds too. During the monsoon season from July to October, the humidity may be uncomfortable and you'll welcome those cooling afternoon showers.

Many travel agents offer package deals that are good value for money. You may also plan your own itinerary and book the Thailand hotels of your choice. There are many websites with information on accommodation in the Land of Smiles. Just remember that it's always better to book ahead.
