What To Know About Web Design

By Isaura Downey

Web design refers to the numerous skills and disciplines that are employed when maintaining and producing websites. There are several elements of the field, for example: search engine optimization, user experience, proprietary software, web graphic design, interface and authoring. Most individuals who are involved in this field work in teams, with every designer handling a different aspect of the project.

It is important for professionals of this kind to be aware of the overall usability of a site. Even if the particular description of their job does not involve writing mark up, they should be up to date regarding web accessibility protocol. Generally speaking, these individuals have both technical and creative skills and use these in order to create websites that are appealing and functional.

The field is quite new. It did not become popular until after inventions of computers and the Internet became more widely used and popular. Now, this type of design is a major part of the world. It is difficult to envision the Internet without music, animations, typography and the many other elements related to web design.

Many different tools are used in the process. The software and standards used in the field evolve with time, even though the principles often remain unchanged. The techniques utilized today are usually related to the overall project goal. Professional designers often use raster and vector graphics to develop prototypes for projects. Website coding is important and can be done automatically, through use of computers, or manually by a developer.

Several resources are available to those who do this line of work. Similarly, certain skills are mandatory in order to be successful. Designers should be versed in typography, user experience, page layout, visual design and coding. All of these elements impact the effectiveness of websites.

Many believe that the websites that are most aesthetically pleasing contain a minimal amount of typefaces and if multiple typefaces are used, they are in the same family. Combining too many styles and elements can be unappealing and lead to a messy page. Consistency is important, just as navigation, aesthetics and readability. Pages that go without visual appeal often go without a lot of web traffic.

Coding, when it is done manually, is tedious job. Still, when coding is done correctly, it can eliminate the occurrence of errors or disruptions on a website. Visuals are key in this field. This is how users are drawn in. A good designer is conscious of the user when he or she does web design.
