The Importance Of Paper Recyclers

By Juliette Cruz

Paper recyclers carry out the work of processing used paper that could otherwise be thrown away as waste into new products. They therefore prevent wastage of materials that are capable of being used and reduce environmental pollution. The recycling involves not only the process of making new products from waste paper but also reusing the products beyond their intended use.

Materials that are commonly used in the recycling process are cardboard and newsprint. The first step in the process involves the sorting of the recyclable materials based on the amount of processing required. These include magazines, newspapers and office waste which are kept in different stations since they make different products. Things like pins are removed at this stage and those materials with plenty of ink are put separately since they require more work.

Materials used to make recycled paper can be generally split into three categories namely pre-consumer, post-consumer and the mill broke. Mill broke refers to the trimmings and the scraps of paper from the paper mills and their recycling is done in these manufacturing industries. Pre-consumer generally consists of materials from the mills that are thrown before consumers use them. The post-consumer category is made up of the materials discarded by the consumers after they have used them. This category includes old telephone directories, old magazines and corrugated containers.

The process of recycling paper involves mixing of these papers with chemicals and water so that are be broken down into very fine pieces. They are then chopped and subjected to heat which helps in breaking them further into a type of plant organic material known as cellulose. The mixture formed at this stage is known as pulp or slurry. It is then thoroughly screened and any substances like plastic and glue still present are removed at this stage. The last phase involves cleaning, removing ink, bleaching and finally mixing with water. After all this it is now ready for use in making new products.

These recyclers have an impact on the environment in areas where the raw materials are obtained and processed and also where the waste from the entire process is disposed. The pulp needed is obtained from trees and the recycling and reusing activities contribute greatly to environmental conservation. Recycling also reduces the rate at which at which energy is consumed and helps in controlling air and water pollution since it has less effect to the atmosphere. It also saves landfill space and helps in keeping substances like methane and greenhouse gases from escaping from the landfills.

The wide varieties of products that result from the recycling process are very useful in different areas. These include photocopying, faxing and printing materials used in offices. There are also envelopes, flip charts and letter heads that are used in companies. Toilet tissues face tissues and paper towels are but a few examples of them.

The process produces many products and the best thing is that it uses less chemicals and bleaches and therefore it is relatively less harmful to the environment. It also makes use of less fossil fuel and ensures that only a lesser amount of sulfur dioxide is released to the atmosphere. By reducing the number of trees that are cut down it leads to sustainable environment.

Paper recyclers contribute to great extent in the efforts of environmental conservation by reducing the felling of trees and making use of waste products. The products resulting from the recycling process are relatively cheaper and their quality is also good. Air and water pollution is also reduced since harmful substances are not released to the atmosphere.
