Texas Mom Given 99 Years in Prison

A Texas judge sentenced 23 years old, Elizabeth Escalona to 99 years in jail on Fri. for super-gluing her 2 year old girl to the wall and thrashing her. Escalona made a plea of guilty to a charge of first-degree injury to a child, a crime punishable from anywhere between probation and life in jail.

Jocelyn Cedillo wasn't quite 3 years old in September 2011 when her mom exploited a powerful adhesive to glue her hands to the wall and beat her as she was having issues with potty training. The babe urinated on herself in the ordeal, prompting Escalona to hit her in the head and kick her in the groin, among other acts of abuse. Escalona was pregnant and had three other children at the time who witnessed the entire situation.

Jocelyn was found by Escalona's ma, who brought her to the infirmary, where medical authorities spotted severe bruises to her face and head, as well as serious brain injury that led to her momentarily being in a coma. Prosecutors showed pictures of Jocelyn's hands, bruised body, and forehead during this week's sentencing hearing. They were pictures that could not be permitted online. A child abuse pediatrician at the Children's Medical Center of Dallas, choked back tears on the stand, saying 'the whole picture was surprising. ' I see lots of children, and this was one of the most shocking cases that I have seen.

During her sentencing hearing, Escalona asked for gentleness, saying she behaved like a monster, but that she merited another chance. Her ma, who had also testified during her trial, asked the judge to sentence Escalona to just probation. Escalona had previously turned down a plea bargain of 45 years in jail.

The Prosecutor, Eren Price, asserted "This mom was pure malicious, and her kids are better off without her. Her five children now have a chance to lead a productive life." Price expounded that the judge was justified in sentencing Escalona to more time after learning more about Escalona during the hearing. Price felt that Escalona was not sorry for what she did to her 2 years old child, but felt miserable for herself and so the tears she lost on the stand were not for her girl , but for herself. Escalona had been formerly analyzed by Texas Kid Protective Services but never arrested or charged.

Escalona's solicitor said the sentence was unwarranted and an appeal would be filed.

All five children were initially put into foster care by the child welfare agency after Jocelyn was brought to the hospital; however , they're all now in the keeping of their gramps and Escalona's mummy, Oefelia Escalona.
